Joel Vickers - (Lead Instrumentalist, Alto Sax)

Joel Vickers, a young and developing sax player, has been surrounded by music all his life. At only twenty years old, he has been given the opportunity to perform at a professional level. All of Joel’s three siblings are involved in music as well as his parents, and some other close relatives.

At the age of eight Joel was introduced to the alto saxophone by his older cousin. Joel fell in love with vibrant sound that a saxophone can make if played right, and decided that was the instrument that he wanted to learn how to play. Joel’s father bought Joel his first Selmer saxophone, and Joel began developing his unique tone. Motivated by how his cousin played so well, Joel pursued learning the alto saxophone in school in the third grade. Early off in his schooling his music teachers could always identify his tone as being different from the rest.

At the age of twelve, Joel began playing weekly in the Rochester Christian Church Worship Team where he developed the ability to play by ear (without music). At thirteen, Joel had earned himself a lead position in his middle school Jazz Band playing the baritone saxophone. At the MCC Jazz festival in 2000, Joel won his first Jazz soloist award for improvisation on the baritone sax. It was then when he was noticed by Spencerport High School’s Jazz Ensemble teacher, Jon Vivattine as a player with a lot of potential.

In High School Joel spent his first year listening to Jazz music, developing his unique tone and performing at various church engagements. As a Sophomore, he earned his way into the Spencerport High School Jazz Ensemble. While playing in the Jazz Ensemble, Joel had the privilege to travel to Quebec, New Orleans, New York City, and Chicago to perform at Jazz Festivals with the band. In May of 2003, Joel won the 2003 Jazz Soloist competition in New Orleans USA, performing with his ensemble the best solo in front of judges. Joel has also had the priviledge to perform live at Spencerport’s annual Evening of Jazz with musical artists Bill Tiberio, Jon Vivattine, David Mancini, and bands such as Primetime Funk, and the Mambo Kings.

As a junior in high school, Joel created his own musical group that he name “Essential Soul.” This group, completely made up of Spencerport Jazz Ensemble members, in a short time has become popular in the town of Spencerport, and has had the privilege to perform at various town events, including the Monroe County Fair, and the Lilac Festival. The group would then move on to become "Tinted Image".

Joel plans to continue his music career, and says, “I don’t think that I could ever stop playing my saxophone. God has given me a gift to play it, and will not let that go to waste.”
